R.E.C.O.V.E.R.Y.
R ealize I’m not God. I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and my life is unmanageable.
E arnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.
C onsciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ’s care and control.
O penly EXAMINE and CONFESS my faults to myself, to God, and to SOMEONE I trust.
“Happy is the person whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Happy is the person whom the Lord does not consider guilty and in whom there is nothing false.” Psalms 32:1–2 (NCV)
I. THE REASON FOR THIS STEP IS BECAUSE OF WHAT GUILT DOES TO US
1. Guilt destroys my CONFIDENCE.
2. Guilt damages my RELATIONSHIPS.
3. Guilt keeps me STUCK in the past.
“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)
II. HOW TO DO THIS STEP
1. Take a personal moral INVENTORY.
“Let us examine and see what we have done and then return to the Lord.” Lamentations 3:40 (NCV)
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting..” Psalms 139:23–24 (NIV)
2. Accept RESPONSIBILITY for my faults.
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8 (NIV)
3. Ask GOD for forgiveness.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
“Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” Psalms 51:2-3 (NIV)
4. Admit my faults to ANOTHER person.
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you. When a believing person prays, great things happen.” James 5:16 (NIV)
5. Accept God’s forgiveness and forgive MYSELF.
“Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glorious standard, and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ.” Romans 3:23–24 (NIV)
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:1 (NIV)
